Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Advertised on a brass plate with heavy imprinted letters, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency takes this story on a wild goose chase where he ultimately saves the world from total annihilation.
If you have read Douglas Adams before, you know what you can expect from him. A very peculiar writing style, that feels more like instant dialogue instead of heavily thought over sentences. It seems like he just leaned over and let the words in his mind pour out over the blank page.
He writes what he thinks, literally.. and it's awesome to read.
I've found that fun is the hardest emotion to invoke when reading, but Adams pulls it off. I'm not saying that everyone will find it as funny as I thought it was, because what makes one laugh is very personal. Some laugh because of a fart, others have a more sensitive palate.
The story starts with a murder and the protagonist, Richard, is being pulled into a time-travelling journey which takes him to the oddest places and the oddest people. From an impossible magic trick, a possessing ghost, a time-traveler, dodo's to an albatross, it's evident that life is proof of the interconnectedness of all things.
It's no point trying to explain what happened and why because I can't even make sense of how the story ended, but it's still quite the ride.
